Denver Mayor Mike Johnston adds more rent assistance money — but rejects most budget requests from council

Mayor Mike Johnston has proposed $7.3 million in budget adjustments in response to City Council's request for $29.1 million in changes for the 2025 budget. This includes an additional $3 million for the Temporary Rent and Utility Assistance program, which is crucial amid rising eviction rates. While Johnston agreed to some funding requests, he rejected additional support for the Denver Basic Income Project and land acquisition for safe parking for homeless individuals. The council will hold a public hearing on the budget on Oct. 28.
